Metamorphosis Monday -- Evolution of my Porch

This is my christening post for my new blog, Spend-A-Buck Farm which is an off-shoot to my food blog Big Black Dog! I will still be keeping Big Black Dog up-to-date with mouth-watering recipes so if you're a little hungry, come on over! All my blogs are now linked and just a click away in the navigation bar located right below the header picture.

This is my first summer in over three years that we have not been under construction on our house and I've taken full advantage of it. For Metamorphosis Monday I thought you might enjoy seeing the Evolution of our wrap-around porch.

Just showing a series of photos puts the construction in warp speed but if you look closely you can see the carpenters change from summer t-shirts and shorts to sweatshirts and jackets. And the sky changes from a gorgeous summer blue to a winter gray.

First is always the demolition which is loud, dirty and very messy. In this case, I was so happy to see our original and totally useless concrete porch destroyed. Sometimes demolition can be fun!

Excavation '06

Then we went through about three months of construction on the house with rough framing of the addition, raising the roof and building the three bays.

2006 Construction 229

I believe this is late November '06 and rough framing is just beginning on the porch.

Rough construction of the porch is now complete.

2006 Construction 287

And here the porch roof is completely shingled and ready for winter.

In the meantime our General Contractor had disappeared and I took over GC'ing the entire project in January '07. In '07 we installed exterior siding and almost finished the interior of the house.

Now fast forward to Jun '08, notice my carpenter, Steve, is in summer garb of shorts and t-shirt. And finally the porch decking is being installed!

By August '08, the skirting is finished and our porch railing is being installed!

Late October '08, the brackets and rails have been installed and the porch is complete!

It's now June '09 and I can finally enjoy my porch!

Because our porch wraps around 3/4's of the house, I have three separate sitting areas and all have slightly different views of our property. And the porch varies in width from 8 1/2' wide to 5' wide.

Here's the North Porch which faces the forest preserve. The rockers were purchased at Lowe's for $88 each! And they are the nicest exterior rockers I found and believe me I've looked everywhere! The rockers have a very nice exterior finish and they're so sturdy. There's nothing rickety about these rockers and they're very comfortable even without cushions!

North Porch

Of course Marcus enjoys relaxing and keeping watch on the porch rail!

The near West Porch and my bistro table and chairs. This is where I enjoy my morning coffee and afternoon lattes! The table was purchased at TJMaxx, on sale, for $29.95. I bought the chairs at Homegoods for $39 each. The 2 blue-checked cushions I picked up at a flea market for $5. The exterior rug is from Lowe's.

West Porch3

The far West Porch with a glimpse of our red horse barn in the background. This is my afternoon napping area. I did splurge a bit with the Lloyd Flanders exterior couch but it was on sale at a fabulous price. Then I found the wonderful weathered rocker that someone put out for the trash! The end table I made from a large Haeger Pottery floor urn and round piece of thick glass that I rescued from a broken interior end table.

And Tinkerbelle enjoys her quiet time on the porch too!

I hope you enjoyed a portion of our construction journey for our new home at Spend-A-Buck Farm!

I had a great time giving an interview with "Front Porch Ideas and More, on the construction and transformation of my porch, Michelle's Craftsman Farm House. If you have a minute it's a fun read.

Oh Michelle...I LOVE seeing your porch. I'd spend the whole day out there walking from one end to the other, trying out ALL the seating areas. Then I'd start all over and do it again! :-) I can just see lazy afternoons, reading a great book with a kitty in my lap! Great Met Monday post...so neat seeing the different stages!
